Handyman in Mitte – from Moabit Altbau to the towers on Leipziger Straße

Mitte is more than the centre. In the Spandauer Vorstadt around Hackescher Markt and Auguststraße you’ll find restored Gründerzeit buildings; around Leipziger Straße and Fischerinsel, East German prefab towers (Plattenbau). Moabit and much of Wedding are dense 19th-century tenement blocks, the Brunnenviertel in Gesundbrunnen is 1960s–70s social housing, and the Hansaviertel in Tiergarten is post-war modernism from the 1957 Interbau exhibition. Add plenty of recent new builds.

In an Altbau it’s often wiring that was renewed in stages, a gas boiler in the flat, and walls where a plug holds in one spot but not the next. Plattenbau walls are concrete: painting is quick, but shelves, lights and wall cabinets need the right drill. Heating there usually comes from a central system, so a cold radiator is often a building issue – we’ll tell you if the property management should hear about it first.

New builds have modern services but often plasterboard walls, so heavy furniture and wall units need the right fixings. For furniture and kitchen assembly we check what the wall is made of before we start.

Parking is tight and paid on many streets in Mitte, and roadworks and events change traffic at short notice. For moves and larger deliveries we can apply for a no-parking zone from the Mitte borough traffic authority. Mitte borders Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. From our office at Landhausstraße 31 in Wilmersdorf we head north through the Tiergarten. Turmstraße in Moabit is about 4 km in a straight line; Alexanderplatz and Leopoldplatz in Wedding are each about 7 km. Travel within Berlin is included in the fixed price, and we allow for city-centre traffic when we set the appointment.
