Handyman in Neukölln – from the Reuterkiez to Rudow

North of the Ringbahn – in the Reuterkiez, Schillerkiez or Körnerkiez – Neukölln is dense Gründerzeit housing with courtyards. Around Richardplatz, old Rixdorf has kept its village core. Further south the picture changes: Britz has the 1920s Hufeisensiedlung (Horseshoe Estate), a UNESCO World Heritage site; Gropiusstadt is a large 1960s–70s estate of high-rises; and Buckow and Rudow are mostly terraced and detached houses.

In north Neukölln it’s classic Altbau work: painting and filling before or after a tenant change, gas boilers and radiators, blocked drains in old pipes, sockets in walls where the plaster crumbles. In the Gropiusstadt towers heating usually comes from a central system, so jobs lean towards kitchens, bathroom fittings and furniture assembly on concrete walls.

In the southern houses, each generation has usually done its own modernising. Typical: circuits not designed for a modern kitchen, bathrooms from the 1970s or 1980s, and cellars people want dry. We look at what’s there before we give you a price.

The Hufeisensiedlung is a listed monument. That mainly covers what you see from outside – windows, doors, façade colours. Interior work such as electrics, plumbing or painting is usually not affected. If you want to change anything on the outside, check with the borough’s heritage authority first; we’ll tell you which jobs that applies to.

Neukölln doesn’t border our borough – Tempelhof-Schöneberg lies in between. From our office at Landhausstraße 31 in Wilmersdorf we usually take the A100 city motorway east. Hermannplatz is about 6.5 km in a straight line, Richardplatz about 8 km, the Hufeisensiedlung in Britz about 9 km, and Rudow is further south still. Travel within Berlin is included in the fixed price.
